Thinking about plants…
I’ve been thinking about plants a lot lately. This topic comes as a little bit of a surprise to me because I think about plants pretty often anyways, so to say “a lot” is quite a claim.
I could write for days on plants, but recently, I’ve mostly been appreciating plants and all they do to keep us healthy and alive.
They carry so much, offer so much, and ask for nothing.
They are the bones of our homes, the bodies of our instruments, and our life-sustaining food. Plants are tea, clothing, medicine, and air filters. They are homes for our outdoor neighbors, shade in the heat, and fuel for our fires.
I want to improve my relationship with the plant world. This might look like offering more thanks, planting more native and diverse species in my yard, or learning how to care for my houseplants better.
Tea
Lately, I’ve been enjoying my collection of dried tea I gathered in the garden last season. I’m learning that strawberry leaves are high in vitamin C, and a little mint makes any tea taste dreamy.
There’s something deeply satisfying about the whole process, from growing to drinking, that I’m learning I really love.
The tea ceremony is pretty great, too. There are some lovely notes about it in a recent Rick Rubin interview with Richard Rudd, where they share seven cups of 90-year-old Oolong. Note: the tea stuff starts about an hour in, I think.
Message from the plants
I’d like to frame this reading by asking you:
🪴What do you need to know about your relationship with plants and the natural world?
It’s likely not a top-of-mind topic, but you may be surprised at how it can help you navigate whatever issues you bring.
🌿 Take a moment to contemplate that question, and when you’re ready, pick a card.

The Empress
The Empress is almost nature Herself, you could say.
Call upon that place in yourself that knows how to nurture and create.
If you don’t have plants, it might be time to change that. You’d be amazed at how much a couple of plants will transform a room. They also help with air quality, so that’s a win (in the winter months especially).
If you’re up to your ears in plants, this is a call to nurture. Check in on everyone. Remove dead leaves, say hello, and maybe offer some plant food. Turn plants that have been facing the same way for a while. Put on some music. Let them know you appreciate them.
If indoor plants are not possible, go out. Notice the plants around your neighborhood or yard. What do you hear? What might they want to say if they could? What can you learn?
two
King of Potted Trees (aka, King of Pentacles)
This is a walk-through-your-garden-moment, particularly—or perhaps most importantly—if you haven’t walked through a garden in a while.
And if you have, beautiful. Make time for it again.
The King wants to remind you that you already have everything you need. Human nature drives us to think, “When I have _____, I’ll be happy.”
If you can easily fill in that blank, then this card is for you to contemplate.
Take some time today to notice what you have, even if you’re deeply longing for something.
The vibration of gratitude and appreciation is right up there with love and can do wonders to transform your perspective, mood, and day. It also does wonders to bring more great things into your life.
three
Five of Potted Trees (aka 5 of Pentacles)
If you chose this card and can’t remember the last time you really connected to nature, then you’re in the right place. Even if your relationship is strong, this message has something for you, too.
You don’t have to go out for a giant hike (but do, if it sounds nice!), instead, contemplate your current relationship with nature and plants:
-Do you feel separate or connected? Why?
-Do you not really give a second thought to plants at all? How many items can you see around you right now that are products of the Earth?
Turn towards nature today, just a little. Notice that it’s always there ready to feed you, heal you, and support you without asking for anything in return.
